This morning a friend of mine invited me to participate in an event happening in our area and I’m already signed up and excited!ย
ย Suicide Prevention
This will be the first time I am participating in Orlando’s 8th Annual Community Walk.
The activity is in support of Out of the Darkness Community Walks, which is organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
I have battled with depression in the past, and though I never got to the point of considering suicide, I do have a relative who has. I won’t be sharing who it is specifically out of respect for their privacy, but I can tell you it is something very painful and difficult to deal with.
Another thing that truly breaks my heart is knowing that suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults (ages 15-24).
As someone who has also served in the military, I can tell you that suicide is very high on the radar of military officials due to the sad frequency among our brothers and sisters in the service. We are constantly counseled and talked to about prevention and given lots of opportunities to see people if we feel the help is needed. We are also trained to see the signs of someone who may be suicidal.
Please join me by finding an event to participate in near you or by donating to my goal (link below).
I will also add the badge to my sidebar for the duration of the fundraiser and hope you will share it through your social media channels in support. My personal goal is to raise $150, but if more is donated that would also be great ๐
